Remodelling

What to Expect During Your Bathroom Remodel

November 7, 2025

Sparling Construction has been remodeling the Bismarck–Mandan community since 1978, helping homeowners live better at the same address with thoughtful design and quality craftsmanship.

Whether you’re ready for a full transformation or a smart refresh, our team can guide your project from first measure to final clean.

Step one: plan the project

  1. Consultation and goals
We talk through what you want to change, your must-haves, and your timeline. If you’re exploring options, we provide a ballpark and allowances for tile, fixtures, and finishes.
  2. Site visit and measure
We document the space and assess plumbing, electrical, ventilation, and structure so the schedule and budget are realistic.
  3. Design and selections
We align on layout, storage, lighting, and style. Making selections early helps keep the schedule on track. When helpful, we can provide a 3D look at the plan so you can visualize the layout and details before construction begins.

Typical timing for steps one to three: about one to three weeks, depending on how quickly selections are made and any permitting needs.

Step two: prepare and order

  1. Permits and scheduling
If permits are required, we handle submittals and inspections. At the same time, we order materials, especially any custom glass or special-order tile.
  2. Protection and demo
We protect floors and walkways, set dust control, then remove old finishes and fixtures.

Step three: build it right

  1. Framing and subfloor repairs as needed
  2. Rough plumbing and electrical, followed by inspections where required
  3. Shower pan and waterproofing
  4. Tile installation and grout
  5. Drywall, patch, and prime
  6. Vanity and cabinetry set; template and install countertops
  7. Finish plumbing and electrical trims
  8. Custom shower glass is measured after the tile, then installed once fabricated
  9. Final paint, deep clean, and punch list walkthrough

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

  • Cosmetic refresh using the existing layout: about one to three weeks
  • Standard gut-and-replace hall bath: about three to six weeks, plus time for custom glass if selected
  • Primary bath with layout changes or premium finishes: about five to eight weeks, plus any custom lead times

Actual timing depends on selections, inspections, and any hidden conditions discovered during demo.

What affects the budget

  • Scope and layout changes
Keeping the layout is the most budget-friendly. Moving the shower or toilet adds labor and materials.
  • Tile and finishes
Large-format porcelain is efficient to install. Intricate mosaics, natural stone, or custom niches add time and sealing.
  • Fixtures and features
Quality valves, multi-function shower systems, heated floors, custom cabinets, and specialty lighting increase cost.
  • Hidden conditions
Subfloor rot, dated wiring, undersized fans, or insulation upgrades are smart fixes that add durability.
  • Glass and specialty elements
Custom glass, curbless entries, built-ins, or smart mirrors add function and value.

Typical ranges to expect

  • Cosmetic update with existing layout and mid-range finishes: roughly eight to fifteen thousand
  • Full gut-and-replace in a standard bath with quality finishes: roughly fifteen to thirty-five thousand
  • Primary bath with layout changes or premium selections: roughly thirty-five to sixty-five thousand plus

Every home is unique. You’ll receive a detailed proposal with allowances tailored to your selections.
