They will advertise that they can handle every need and are large enough to take on everyone. Many times these new contractors to our area “over-promise & under-deliver”. They may even have a great website, advertise on local radio, be quick to present their insurance and license paperwork, but most of these companies are “storm-chasers”, or “economy chasers”. Here today – gone tomorrow. Where are they when you have warranty work that needs to be done? Don’t be fooled! Some of you may remember what happened with some of our past hail storms.

Many people are going to need help getting their homes back into shape after flood water has receded, and the Attorney General`s office is warning homeowners to do their homework before hiring a contractor.

Home repair scams flourish after disasters, and unsuspecting homeowners can get ripped off during a time when all they want to do is put their lives back together.

Although you may be anxious to get your home back in order, the Attorney General`s office says to get bids from several contractors before hiring one.

Parrell Grossman, Director Consumer Protection said, "I can`t emphasize enough how important it is to make sure you get written bids and that you check out the reputation and history of that business before deciding to hire that contractor and many times we find that that the service from out of state contractors who swarm to these disaster areas or communities are priced much higher than what a local contractor would charge."

You should also get the contract in writing.

Grossman explained, "One of the common complaints is the company will charge for instance $10,000 for a job and the homeowner will believe that they were going to do a substantial amount of additional repairs and in fact the company does much less than was promised.

Home repair scammers often set up offices so they can advertise as a local business, and offer guarantees that become worthless once the contractor skips town.

Grossman added, "It`s so important to hire a local, reputable contractor you`re familiar with because when that contractor who`s been in North Dakota or your community, your area does that job, a few months later if you have some concerns or problems with the repair you`ll be able to reach that contractor."

Contractors doing more than $2,000 worth of repairs need to be licensed by the Secretary of State and registered with ND workforce and safety insurance and Job Service North Dakota.

If someone isn`t from the area they should have a transient merchants license. That means they`ve paid a bond to the state. If someone claims to be local, ask them how long they`ve been here. You can also look in the phone book to see if they`re listed.
